Caroline is a Senior lecturer and Chairman, Department of Medical Microbiology at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and technology with a strong background in medical microbiology and molecular epidemiology. She has a BSc in Medical Microbiology, magna cum laude, from JKUAT, MSc. Molecular Medicine and PhD in Epidemiology from JKUAT with a research placement at the Institute of Applied Tumor Biology, Heidelberg University.
Dr Ngugi is a founder member of the Kenya National Young Academy of Sciences. She also chairs the Innovation center for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology under the Africa-ai-Japan Kenya project, she is a founder member of the JKUAT Scientific and Ethics Review Committee. She is an affiliate of the African academy of Sciences and a fellow of the African Science Leadership Program. She is competent in collaborating, performing and supporting multidisciplinary research in early detection and diagnosis of cervical cancer as well as factors affecting uptake of cervical cancer screening. She is also involved in studying the mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance expressed by microorganisms. Ngugi has experience in laboratory accreditations, quality control/assurance programs, auditing, staff recruitment and administrative work ups in laboratory and university management as well as curriculum, policy development and implementation. Ngugi is also involved in community development programs and is currently serving as Chairman, Board of Management Githuya Secondary School, Gatundu, Kenya. She is the founder and Patron of a mentorship club, The GIRLS (Growth in Research and Leadership in Science) club at the School of Biomedical Sciences in JKUAT.
