Dr. Waechter has been implementing global health research studies of different methodologies and varying fields of inquiry in a tropical developing setting for 10+ years. This includes studies on vector-borne viruses, maternal-child health, early child brain development, health behavior, interpersonal and social determinants of health such as domestic and community violence, and environmental and occupational health. As a psychologist he is particularly interested in individual mindset, decision-making, and priority-setting. As a medical educator and associate director of research, he is particularly interested in bioethics and research ethics and the importance of continuing education to track emerging trends in research ethics and bioethics generally. He has published a book and several peer-reviewed journal articles on the technical economic analysis of diseases and how to prioritize limited funds to maximize return on investment. His latest chapter discusses some of the challenges he has personally encountered in implementing health research in a tropical developing setting, as well as some of the skills and strategies he has used to address those challenges.
